This summer, Sparkly and Smart art hit the shelves of the legendary @keplersbooks here in Palo Alto 💚💚 This collection was my first social enterprise, and has funded most of the work of BloomBox Design Labs to date, starting with water wells and sanitary pad making machines, and to this day, continues to fuel growth.

The people who believed in and bought this art changed my life in a big way. I’m so honored and grateful I get to share it with my new community in California while I’m at university (and give my grandma a tour). Here’s a pic from 2017 :) Thirteen year old Sofie would be blown away that we made it in THE Kepler’s Bookstore. 😁 Feeling grateful 🫶🏼

Teacher training for the first ever BloomBox (2021) in Blantyre, Malawi.

I found these photos of Peter Kauya and Davis Galero, now team leads, at the e-learning center with fellow educators. Pre-internet, teacher training at the time was focussed on mastery of the intranet server; a local server equipped with downloaded content from Khan Academy and Wikipedia among other sources.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of AI in the classroom. Today, it is possible, and necessary, for students in completely off-grid communities to learn with cutting edge technology tools and connectivity and to receive answers to any question imaginable within seconds. Stumbling across these photos made me smile, thinking about how much can change, even in a few short years.

To fund installations of BloomBoxes at scale in Malawi, I’ve been on a quest to see if our patented retractable solar roof system could be profitable in the US market. I believed it might.

To test this theory, we built a scale model of the roof, loaded it into a Sprinter, and drove it from SF to LA to bring the roof to RE+, the largest clean energy conference in North America.

We had great interest in our roof as a disaster relief resilience solution in Ukraine, Brazil, and Mexico. There’s also the potential to use BloomBoxes to power neonatal ICUs in Ghana. It’s very gratifying to learn that BloomBox can be profitable and still make an impact. In the US, there’s interest in agriculture to put roofs on stilts to charge equipment, work with the Navajo Nation energy committee and even the chance to bring them to festivals like Burning Man! It’s fun to imagine the possibilities.

Thank you to my family, friends and day 1 team for sticking with me for every step of this adventure. It was SO fun. ⭐️

Day 4 of 5 of the BloomBox 4.0 Installation at the Malawi Institute of Education! 🧡

Today, we drove to Lilongwe to meet with the Chief of Education & Adolescent Development at UNICEF Malawi, and discuss the potential for scaling BloomBoxes across the country as teacher training centers. 🌸🌷 We also went to visit Dzaleka Refugee Camp and check in with leaders at PLAN International and the UNHCR about their experience with the lab, one year since launch. It’s working really well and students love it! The dustiness of the camp had me reflecting on the importance of maintenance so it can function even better for them for years to come. Another beautiful, inspiring and important day with my team! GO BLOOMBOX! ☀️💕

2023 was a big and beautiful year!! I feel really blessed to have been surrounded by love this year, and to have watched real life magic happen as the product of our team’s hard work, creativity and attention to detail.

Some of my favourite moments of this year included returning to my beautiful high school to give a keynote address on design thinking and the launch of our app SuperBloom, watching how resilient Malawi was as it recovered from Cyclone Freddy, for a period of which BloomBox 1.0 was the only power supply for miles around, finishing a phenomenal first year at Stanford (a place that feels like home, and that inspired me to grow at solar car club, business competitions, and on adventures with some of the coolest people I know), learning more about architecture at internships in Newfoundland and Utah, installing BloomBox 3.0 at Dzaleka refugee camp (where digital degrees are essential for young people without citizenship), spending hours and hours on business calls (during a gap quarter from school) + pitching BloomBox Design Labs as a public benefit company (and being really lucky to obtain seed impact investment to fuel next strides), installing Starlink satellite internet in Blantyre (details to come!) and spending time with the team that taught me everything I know about sustainable global development (and life). ⭐️

A lot more cool stuff has happened too, that I can’t fit in this post. I’ve learned a lot and I’m filled with love and gratitude. Thank you all for being part of it. Let’s keep going in 2024 and beyond💗

today we put all the finishing touches on the box and completed staff training for the laptops and the RACHEL server in the BloomBox!! plus i got to rock a @planinternational flag, Toussaint says swag is always a priority 😎, and on the long drive home i realized my hands were beyond messy, and that i have SO much to be grateful for 💖💖

day 4 (our last day of the build💗) in review:

today we put all the finishing touches on the box and completed staff training for the laptops and the RACHEL server in the BloomBox!! plus i got to rock a @planinternational flag, Toussaint says swag is always a priority 😎, and on the long drive home i realized my hands were beyond messy, and that i have SO much to be grateful for 💖💖

today the team got the chance to walk around Dzaleka. so much beauty + heartbreak to witness. (mostly beauty tho) crazy to learn that Dzaleka is home to over 51,000 refugees, and that it accepts 2000-5000 new refugees per year, and only about 1% leave the camp. despite how strained it’s resources are, it’s a very hopeful place, and it was magic to see our BloomBox tables coming to life in the center of the camp 🧡

first of all, this is Peter (director of NBSS: site of BB1.0) and Mike (driver and engineer). they are our Malawi team leads. they love dancing, the wakanda handshake and last week they saw the ocean for the first time when we pulled over after a day of building 😁

whats a great adventure without a bit of drama😔after travelling from vancouver to hong kong to singapore to madagascar to mozambique, and finally, to malawi, the bloombox met a great challenge making it up the last 100m to the school. in the middle of a bustling market street, after the sun had set, the crane chain broke, and as we almost lost it all, i was reminded how important and full of love and hope this box is. the ironic “better days” truck made us smile through the tears but we are happy to report all is perfect now! 😮‍💨💗 lots to celebrate :)

We are so excited! The BloomBox has successfully completed the solar power trial in Vancouver! Now our team is repackaging panels, roofing, solar batteries and classroom outfitting for upcoming shipping. And, this weekend the BloomBox was featured on CBC news! More updates to come :)

We are so excited! The BloomBox has successfully completed the solar power trial in Vancouver! Now our team is repackaging panels, roofing, solar batteries and classroom outfitting for upcoming shipping. And, this weekend the BloomBox was featured on CBC news! More updates to come :)

an incredibly successful and fun trip to Cape Town a couple of weeks ago!! 40 million girls around the world are missing school days when they have their periods and of those, 900 000 are in South Africa alone. It really worries me that girls might have to miss out on the things they care about and that empower them to change the world, like going to school, because of this issue. Each girl could be missing up to 145 school days because of lack of access to the products they need. I feel so blessed to have been involved an awesome Dignity Towel public health campaign by supporting it with a sanitary pad machine in the heart of one of South Africa’s biggest townships that will create over 1000 pads a day to support thousands of girls! I’m so grateful to the all the power girls who made this possible! They are some of the smartest, most kind and most inspiring people I know!! Thank you for all of you support! much love 💗💗 stay safe everyone!
